What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure offered by Dr. Gardner to refresh the appearance of the upper or lower eyelids. It addresses issues like excess skin, wrinkles, hollows, and fatty deposits that cause puffiness and make the eyes look tired. The surgery not only removes these imperfections but also reshapes and restores youthful volume to the eyelid area. This enhances the eyes’ natural beauty, making them more defined and drawing attention to their appearance. Modern techniques allow for a more refined result, focusing on both function and aesthetics.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Blepharoplasty?
The best candidates for eyelid surgery are individuals in good health who have realistic expectations about the outcome. They are usually at least 35 years old and do not have excessively dry eyes or other ophthalmologic diseases.
If you desire a general change in your eyelid anatomy or if excess skin and wrinkles around your upper and lower eyelids are causing bags and circles, you may be a candidate for blepharoplasty. Also known as eyelid surgery, this procedure offers a long-lasting solution to improve your confidence and make you look and feel younger.
Benefits of Blepharoplasty
- Restores Clear Vision: In some cases, sagging skin on the upper eyelid can obstruct your line of sight. Eyelid surgery removes excess tissue, improving your ability to see and making everyday activities easier.
- Natural, Refreshed Appearance: The procedure reduces puffiness, droopy eyelids, and under-eye bags, giving your face a rejuvenated appearance without looking “done” or overworked.
- Boosts Confidence: Subtle but noticeable changes around the eyes can restore a youthful look, which often enhances self-confidence.
- Long-Lasting Results: With proper care, the result of a blepharoplasty surgery can last for many years, offering both cosmetic and functional benefits.
What to Expect During the Blepharoplasty Procedure
A typical eyelid surgery, whether just two upper or lower eyelids or all four eyelids are addressed, may take 30 minutes up to two hours. These procedures may be performed either in the office or in an operating suite.
You’ll receive a local anesthetic after either oral or intravenous sedation. More extensive procedures are done with general anesthesia. Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed first; incisions are made along the natural folds of the eyelids, and the skin is separated so that excess fat, tissue, and muscle can be contoured or removed.
An incision is usually made either inside the eyelid or just below the lashes for the lower eyelids. These incisions generally heal imperceptibly. Excess fatty deposits are removed or contoured to eliminate bags or circles below the eyes. This is followed by excess skin removal and careful closure of the incisions. In some cases, after the incision is closed, laser or chemical resurfacing may be recommended to improve the quality of the eyelid skin.
Post-Operative Care and Recovery
Initially, there will be swelling and bruising. Eyelid skin is particularly prone to this, but with an aggressive application of ice or iced saline compresses, this will quickly resolve. Antibiotic eye ointment will be applied to the incisions twice a day, occasionally making reading difficult.
To pass the time, books on tape work well while ice packs are applied during the first few days. Pain is generally minimal with this procedure. Many patients need only Tylenol.
After one week, make-up can be applied, and most patients can return to normal social and work activities. Deeper bruises may last longer. Heavy lifting or strenuous activity is limited to two weeks.
What are the Risks?
While eyelid surgery is a common procedure that thousands of people undergo every year without problems, there is always some risk involved with surgery. Possible complications include infection, hematoma, scarring, allergic reactions, eyelid position changes or asymmetry, other cosmetic imperfections, an inability to completely close the eyes, loss of vision, and dryness or irritation in the eyes.
Complications are rare, and the beneficial results are usually very long-lasting. However, over time, the aging process continues, and eventually, the laxity of upper eyelid tissues will recur. Some patients choose additional surgery on the upper eyelids after several years. Repeat surgery on the lower eyelids is rarely necessary.

FAQs
Will blepharoplasty improve my vision?
If drooping upper eyelids interfere with your vision, blepharoplasty surgery can help. By removing excess skin and fat, the procedure lifts the eyelid, giving you a clearer field of view.
How long do the results of blepharoplasty last?
The results of a blepharoplasty procedure are known for their long-lasting results. Many patients enjoy the benefits for ten years or more, depending on factors like skincare habits, lifestyle, and genetics. While the natural aging process will continue, the improvements achieved with the surgery can significantly delay the visible signs of aging around the eyes.
Are there any non-surgical alternatives to blepharoplasty?
Yes, for individuals who aren’t ready for surgery, options such as laser resurfacing, radiofrequency treatments, or injectable fillers can address mild concerns around the eyes. However, these alternatives may offer a different level of improvement than an eyelid surgery procedure.
Can blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?
Absolutely. For better results, many people combine eyelid surgery with other treatments, such as a brow lift or rhinoplasty. Combining procedures can effectively achieve multiple improvements in one surgical session, making recovery shorter.
How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost?
Eyelid surgery is fully personalized to address each patient’s unique aesthetic goals. The cost depends on the degree of correction required and the overall complexity of the surgery.
During your consultation, we will discuss your personalized surgical plan and the cost associated with it. For your convenience, we also provided financing options so that you can take advantage of affordable payments.
